Several attendees of the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT event in Hong Kong recently voiced concerns about eye discomfort, attributing it to the event’s lighting setup. The event, known as ApeFest, was organized by Yuga Labs Inc., the creators of the Bored Ape NFT collection, and took place from November 3 to 5. It featured well-lit festivities that some attendees found to be too intense.
Numerous individuals took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their discomfort, with some attendees reporting eye strain issues after participating in ApeFest. In response to these concerns, a spokesperson for Yuga Labs issued a statement, saying, “We are aware of this situation and are taking it seriously. We are actively reaching out to those affected to better understand the root cause.”
One attendee, Adrian Zdunczyk, a prominent figure in the crypto community known for providing chart-based technical analysis of digital assets, shared his personal experience on X. He mentioned that he had attended ApeFest and subsequently sought medical attention, where he was diagnosed with photokeratitis—a condition resulting from unprotected exposure to ultraviolet light. Fortunately, his vision remained close to perfect, with no significant cornea damage.
Yuga Labs is renowned for its involvement in the creation of both the Bored Ape and CryptoPunks NFT collections. The NFT market, as a whole, has experienced a decline from its peak during the pandemic. Additionally, creators and traders are currently engaged in discussions surrounding the appropriate level of royalty payments within the NFT ecosystem.
