Ethereum (ETH) has experienced a sharp 53% decline since Eric Trump’s endorsement of the cryptocurrency in February 2025. At the time of writing, ETH has fallen from $3,400 to $1,550, leaving many who followed Trump’s advice facing significant financial losses.
On February 3, 2025, Eric Trump, the son of U.S. President Donald Trump, expressed his bullish outlook on Ethereum via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “In my opinion, it’s great to add $ETH. You can thank me later.” The endorsement initially sparked optimism, with ETH rising by 25% within 24 hours. However, this rally was short-lived, as just a day before Trump’s post, his father’s announcement of impending tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China sent shockwaves through global financial markets, including cryptocurrencies.
The price of ETH has continued to decline in the aftermath of the escalating tariff war, and Eric Trump’s post is now a source of widespread ridicule on social media. Many are sarcastically criticizing his recommendation, with tech investor and entrepreneur Chris Bakke pointing out that a $100,000 investment made at the time of Eric’s endorsement would now be worth only $46,782—resulting in a staggering 53% loss. Bakke humorously noted that such a financial blow could also lead to personal challenges, quipping, “If you invested $100,000 in ETH at the time of this post you’d have $46,782 and be divorced by now.”
The Trump family’s involvement in the cryptocurrency space has also come under scrutiny, particularly amid the decline in ETH’s value. A recent report revealed that the Trump family had taken majority control of World Liberty Financial, a controversial decentralized crypto venture. The company raised over $550 million but allegedly funneled $400 million in fees to insiders, leaving only a fraction of the funds to develop the platform. This move has drawn criticism from industry experts and has attracted the attention of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), further eroding investor confidence in Trump-related crypto ventures.
