In a pioneering move, Dantewada, a small town in Chhattisgarh, has embraced blockchain technology to safeguard land records, an innovation that is setting a new standard in the country. The district has partnered with Bengaluru-based Zupple Labs to transfer over seven lakh land records to the Avalanche blockchain, a move aimed at creating tamper-proof, easily accessible documentation for residents and administrators alike.
This forward-thinking initiative comes under the leadership of IAS officer Jayant Nahata, who identified the inefficiencies in the district’s traditional paper-based land record system. Nahata, during his tenure as the chief of Dantewada Zila Panchayat, observed the long delays and inconsistencies caused by manual record-keeping, which often took weeks to process land transactions and approvals.
Faced with these challenges, the local administration saw the need for a more secure, transparent, and efficient system. Blockchain technology emerged as the solution, enabling the creation of permanent, indestructible records that would both streamline the land administration process and provide a secure verification system for citizens.
The new system includes the deployment of the LegitDoc application, a blockchain-based solution provided by Zupple Labs, which allows administrative staff to digitally verify land records. Additionally, dedicated kiosks will be set up across various tehsils, enabling citizens to access their land documents quickly and without hassle.
This project aligns with India’s National Blockchain Strategy, which was formulated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and NITI Aayog. Neil Martis, CEO of Zupple Labs, highlighted that the initiative would increase transparency, reduce land disputes, and promote fairer land governance in the region.
The switch to Avalanche blockchain is seen as a significant step in modernizing land record-keeping, reducing administrative costs, and ensuring the long-term security of land ownership data.
