Cannes is taking steps to integrate cryptocurrency payments for local businesses as part of the city’s broader strategy to embrace Web3 technology. The announcement was made by Mayor David Lisnard, who revealed plans to train merchants on how to accept digital currencies, aligning with the city’s preparations for the upcoming Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in June 2025.
The initiative, disclosed via LinkedIn, aims to ensure that Cannes is ready to accommodate the crypto community during the event, which is expected to attract more than 10,000 attendees. As part of the lead-up to EthCC, the city government will organize training sessions for local businesses, focusing on the technical, legal, accounting, and tax implications of cryptocurrency adoption. The first session will take place on February 4 at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
In addition to the training, a “crypto-friendly” merchant map will be introduced, helping EthCC attendees and other visitors easily locate businesses in Cannes that accept digital currencies. This initiative is seen as an opportunity for local enterprises to engage with a global, tech-savvy audience, while enhancing Cannes’ standing as a premier destination for international events.
EthCC, Europe’s largest Ethereum-focused event, is set to be a major occasion for blockchain enthusiasts, with a projected turnout of over 6,500 registered participants. While the move aligns with the global rise in interest in blockchain and digital assets, some speculate that Lisnard’s support for crypto could also be a strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 French presidential election.
Though primarily aimed at supporting local commerce and tourism, Cannes’ commitment to blockchain and cryptocurrency marks an important step in the city’s ongoing digital transformation.
