Sony has launched its Soneium mainnet, a blockchain platform designed to empower creators with faster and more affordable solutions to engage with their fanbases through NFTs and cryptocurrency. Officially launched on January 14, 2025, Soneium builds on the success of Sony’s 2024 testnet, Soneium Minato, which attracted over 15 million wallets and facilitated more than 50 million transactions.
With this launch, Sony is introducing S.BLOX, an innovative cryptocurrency exchange that streamlines the process of acquiring digital assets for use in Web3 applications. To celebrate its debut, S.BLOX is offering new users Bitcoin rewards and has announced a forthcoming NFT campaign in collaboration with the popular anime franchise Ghost in the Shell.
Alongside S.BLOX, Sony is also teasing the debut of its NFT-based Fan Marketing Platform, slated for release in early 2025. The platform will simplify the process of issuing NFTs and tracking engagement metrics, with features such as integrated web wallets and social login options. It will offer creators the tools to connect with their audiences through NFT-based projects and initiatives.
The mainnet will enable developers and creators who previously used the testnet to migrate their applications to the new platform, unlocking potential for fan-driven community events and in-app cryptocurrency payments.
Soneium operates as a layer-2 solution built atop Ethereum, tackling issues such as slow data processing speeds and high fees typically associated with Ethereum’s layer-1. By integrating the Optimism stack developed by the Optimism Foundation, Soneium provides a scalable, EVM-compatible, and developer-friendly blockchain solution.
In 2024, Sony Block Solutions Labs also formed a strategic partnership with the Startale Group to advance Web3 infrastructure, setting the stage for the launch of the Soneium mainnet.
