As the cryptocurrency market gears up for 2025, perspectives on altcoins’ performance remain split. While CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju remains cautious, predicting that altcoins might not see significant growth, analysts at Citi express a more optimistic view, forecasting a potential “altcoin season” after Bitcoin’s strong performance in 2024.
In a tweet on January 10, 2025, Ju described the altcoin market as a “zero-sum PvP game.” According to him, the market is stagnant, with gains largely being reallocated between participants rather than driven by new capital inflows. This setup, Ju suggests, limits the growth of altcoins and results in a situation where for one participant to profit, another must lose the equivalent amount. He further pointed out that while Bitcoin’s market value has doubled, the overall market capitalization of altcoins remains below previous all-time highs, with only a few select altcoins—around 3-5—possessing strong use cases and viable narratives.
Contrastingly, Citi analysts have a more bullish outlook. They highlight Ethereum’s (ETH) increasing momentum, especially after its approval for spot ETFs, positioning it as a potential market leader alongside Bitcoin. Citi’s analysts also noted Ethereum’s impressive recent performance, with the token rising 59% in just one month. According to them, Ethereum and other altcoins, including Ripple (XRP), Solana (SOL), and Tron (TRX), could experience significant growth in 2025, particularly after Bitcoin’s 116% rise in 2024, spurred by key events such as the BTC halving and the approval of spot BTC ETFs.
The overall sentiment for altcoins in 2025, however, might hinge on new emerging narratives and venture capital (VC) activity. Pitchbook reported a strong surge in crypto fundraising in Q1 2024, with $2.4 billion raised across 518 deals. This growth indicates increased investor confidence in early-stage projects, particularly those within emerging sectors like AI, which saw a $106 million funding round in Q3 2024.
Both perspectives suggest that the altcoin market could see a shift in the coming year. Ju’s focus on the necessity for robust narratives in select altcoins aligns with the optimism shared by Citi analysts, who predict that after Bitcoin’s strong performance in 2024, 2025 could witness a wider “altcoin season.” If investor appetite for innovation and early-stage projects continues, the next year could bring substantial opportunities for altcoins, especially those that are well-positioned with strong use cases.
In conclusion, while CryptoQuant’s Ki Young Ju remains skeptical of broad altcoin growth in 2025, the rising VC interest, new narratives, and Ethereum’s ongoing success point to a potentially brighter future for select altcoins, making 2025 a year of significant possibilities.
