From Wednesday to Saturday, China’s top legislator Zhao Leji made an official goodwill visit to Greece.
During meetings with Greek President Sakellaropoulou, Zhao conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping. He noted that bilateral ties have developed steadily since diplomatic relations were established over half a century ago. They also highlighted the significance of the joint congratulatory letters sent by Xi and Sakellaropoulou for the World Conference of Classics, emphasizing the inheritance and exchange of civilizations. Zhao said China, guided by leaders’ consensus, wants to carry forward friendship with Greece, be good partners, and jointly implement the Global Civilization Initiative for a shared future. Sakellaropoulou asked Zhao to convey her greetings to Xi and spoke of mutual respect and support between the two countries, as well as fruitful cultural exchanges.
Meeting with Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis, Zhao mentioned Xi’s 2019 visit opening a new chapter in relations. China appreciates Greece’s one-China stance and is willing to boost various aspects of cooperation. Mitsotakis said Greece adheres to the one-China policy and hopes to strengthen cooperation in multiple fields and welcomes Chinese companies.
In talks with Greek Parliament President Tassoulas, Zhao said China’s NPC is ready to work with the Greek parliament on exchanges, learn from each other in legislation and supervision, and promote cooperation. Tassoulas said the two legislatures can do more for bilateral cooperation.
Before talks, Zhao received a golden medal from Tassoulas. During the visit, Zhao attended the launching ceremony of the Chinese School of Classical Studies in Athens, visited the Port of Piraeus, and toured Crete’s agricultural projects.
