On Sunday, China voiced its dissatisfaction and vehement opposition following the United States’ approval of a new round of arms sales to the Taiwan region worth $385 million. The news came after the US Department of Defense announced that the US Department of State had given the green light to this arms deal.
In an online statement released by China’s foreign ministry, it was made clear that China has already lodged serious protests with the US. China firmly called on the US to cease immediately arming the Taiwan island and refrain from abetting and backing the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces in their attempts to pursue “Taiwan independence” through military buildup.
A spokesperson stated that the US arms sales to the Taiwan region are a blatant violation of the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique of 1982. Moreover, these sales also encroach upon China’s sovereignty and security interests.
The spokesperson further emphasized that such sales constitute a severe breach of international law. They send a terribly wrong message to the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and are harmful to China-US relations as well as the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Additionally, the decision to sell arms to the Taiwan region blatantly contradicts the commitments made by US leaders not to support “Taiwan independence”.
China vowed to take strong and resolute countermeasures to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity in the face of this unjust move by the United States.
