SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest wireless carrier, has announced its collaboration with the Aptos Foundation to integrate Tether’s USDT stablecoin into its web3 product, T Wallet. This partnership aims to enhance access to stablecoins for millions of SK Telecom customers through a familiar platform.
The integration, announced in a press release on Friday, will allow users to seamlessly access USDT on the Aptos blockchain, leveraging the support of SK Telecom’s PASS app. This move is part of SK Telecom’s broader strategy to bridge traditional finance with decentralized systems, simplifying the user experience for engaging with digital assets.
Oh Sehyeon, vice president of SK Telecom’s web3 division, emphasized the importance of this partnership in promoting mainstream web3 adoption. “We share a vision with key web3 players like Tether to expand access to digital assets and decentralized networks to more people, informed by our decades of telco expertise,” he stated.
This initiative taps into SK Telecom’s extensive customer base, which exceeds 30 million users, positioning T Wallet as a gateway for stablecoin utilization in everyday transactions.
The partnership follows Tether’s support for the Aptos Network, introduced in mid-August. Tether noted the blockchain’s robust developer community and its consistent growth in deployed contracts as significant factors for this expansion. The network’s extremely low gas fees were also highlighted as a key reason for adding support, making Aptos an economically viable option for a wide range of applications, from microtransactions to large-scale enterprise operations.
