In a significant gesture aimed at bolstering education, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador has donated two Bitcoins—valued at approximately $133,000—to philanthropist Shin Fujiyama. The contribution will support an initiative to establish 1,000 schools in Honduras.
The donation was presented to Fujiyama, the founder of Students Helping Honduras, an organization dedicated to combating poverty through educational opportunities. Bukele, who is recognized for his innovative approach to cryptocurrency, has actively promoted the use of Bitcoin as a means to rejuvenate the economy of El Salvador.
Fujiyama is currently undertaking a charity run spanning 3,000 kilometers to gather funds for the school project. During his run, he shared a heartfelt video expressing his appreciation to President Bukele for the generous donation, highlighting the impact it will have on the educational landscape in Honduras.
Since making Bitcoin legal tender in El Salvador in 2021, Bukele has emerged as a prominent advocate for the cryptocurrency. This donation aligns with his vision of integrating Bitcoin into everyday life and leveraging it for positive societal changes.
While there have been challenges associated with Bitcoin adoption within El Salvador, Bukele remains steadfast in his commitment, recently announcing the country’s policy to acquire one Bitcoin daily.
This contribution underscores Bukele’s ambition to harness Bitcoin not only for economic growth but also for humanitarian efforts. As Bitcoin’s value continues to appreciate, this donation is set to play a vital role in advancing educational initiatives within Honduran communities.
