A significant hacking incident involving the influencer known as The Cryptomist on social media platform X has emerged, with Russian scammers gaining control of the account to promote fraudulent job opportunities.
In response to this alarming development, crypto analyst ZachXBT issued a warning to the community, emphasizing the dangers associated with following compromised accounts, particularly given his many mutual connections with The Cryptomist.
Typically, these scams lure followers with enticing job offers, aiming to deceive them into downloading malware or divulging sensitive personal information. The hackers, impersonating The Cryptomist, posted a message stating, “Web3 position available (remote). Big project to work with.” This enticing offer aimed to attract followers seeking remote Web3 jobs with promises of payment.
Many users responded to the posts, expressing interest in the available positions, illustrating how easily individuals can become victims of such schemes. ZachXBT highlighted that if a user attempted to contact The Cryptomist directly, they would receive a reply directing them to message an individual on Telegram using the handle “@wzwz_eth” for further details about the job opportunity.
Upon contacting @wzwz_eth on Telegram, users may be met with a message encouraging them to sign up on a scam-linked website. This message typically requests personal information such as email, username, and password, falsely claiming that this data is needed to access project details and secure a moderator role, which purportedly grants access to various tools.
The message also instructs users to “just don’t forget to leave your username so that I can give you role, since without it most of the site is closed.” This request for a username to unlock features raises significant red flags, as legitimate platforms rarely demand such information.
To avoid falling prey to such scams, users are urged to remain vigilant, recognize warning signs such as requests for personal data, and verify the authenticity of job offers before engaging.
