World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency initiative backed by former President Donald Trump and his sons, encountered significant technical difficulties during the launch of its token for accredited investors on Tuesday.
The project kicked off its inaugural token sale on its official website, aiming to raise $300 million at a valuation of $1.5 billion. However, eager investors faced frustration as they experienced multiple outages on the site, which struggled to handle the overwhelming traffic.
Although the website went offline due to the surge in users, it has since come back online sporadically, reportedly after migrating to a new web hosting service. As of 1:48 p.m. New York time, over 500 million Ethereum-based tokens had been sold at a price of 1.5 cents each.
The initiative began gathering names for its approved list of accredited investors on September 30. To qualify, potential investors must meet specific criteria, including a minimum net worth of over $1 million. Despite the ongoing token sale, the project’s accounts on Telegram and X (formerly Twitter) have not provided any updates regarding its current status. Nevertheless, Trump actively promoted the sale over the weekend on his social media platform.
World Liberty Financial has stated its mission to make opportunities and resources accessible to all Americans, particularly those historically excluded from such avenues. A recent white paper clarified that while the Trump family serves as principal crypto promoters, they do not control, manage, or sell the initiative.
With the token presale occurring just weeks before the presidential election, Trump appears to be strategically appealing to the cryptocurrency community, which has shown increasing political engagement. The former president has previously launched several non-fungible token (NFT) collections and has participated as a keynote speaker at major Bitcoin conferences. Alongside influential figures in the crypto space, including Paxos co-founder Rich Teo, his children—Barron Trump, Donald Jr., and Eric Trump—are recognized as web3 ambassadors for the project.
