Succinct Labs and OP Labs have joined forces to develop OP Succinct, a zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup solution designed to enhance transaction finality and reduce gas costs compared to traditional optimistic rollups.
Partnership Details
On September 11, Succinct Labs unveiled its collaboration with OP Labs, a key player in developing the Optimism protocol. This partnership aims to integrate Succinct’s general-purpose zero-knowledge virtual machine SP1 with OP Labs’ OP Stack, resulting in the creation of OP Succinct—a zkEVM rollup.
Key Advantages
OP Succinct is designed to offer faster and more cost-effective upgrades for OP Stack chains, utilizing zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs). According to Succinct Labs, this new solution is highly customizable and simplifies the transition from OP Stack rollups to ZK rollups.
The modular architecture of the OP Stack allows for an efficient two-step integration process, requiring minimal code modifications. This feature facilitates easy adoption within existing rollup-as-a-service deployments.
Impact on Scaling Solutions
The introduction of OP Succinct marks a significant advancement in layer 2 scaling solutions. ZK rollups provide faster transaction finality and lower gas costs by leveraging off-chain transaction proofs.
The development comes on the heels of Succinct Labs and OP Labs securing $55 million in a Paradigm-led funding round in March 2024. With OP Succinct, upgrading an OP Stack to ZKP functionality can be achieved within an hour, compared to the seven-day fraud-proof window associated with traditional optimistic rollups. Additionally, proving costs for OP Succinct are estimated at 0.5 to 1 cent, significantly lower than the 1.34 cents on OP Mainnet and 1.11 cents on OP Sepolia.
This collaboration underscores the growing momentum in layer 2 scaling solutions and sets a new benchmark for efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the blockchain space.
