Square Enix, renowned for its iconic Final Fantasy series, has stepped into the blockchain gaming arena with its latest project, Symbiogenesis, announced in November 2022. While Square Enix has previously made forays into the crypto space, this marks its inaugural venture into the Ethereum ecosystem with a dedicated game.
Described as a “digital collectible art project,” Symbiogenesis leverages the Ethereum and Polygon networks for its Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). The narrative unfolds in a story-based browser game, where humanity inhabits a floating continent in the sky, grappling with the menace of a colossal dragon.
Unlike conventional game endings, Symbiogenesis leaves the fate of its fantasy world in the hands of three fortunate players. To qualify for this pivotal role, players must navigate through every story chapter and quest, unlocking and completing each in their journey.
Accessing Symbiogenesis: NFTs and Gameplay
Enthusiasts can engage in Symbiogenesis without the need to mint any NFTs, offering a free-to-play option for gamers. However, participants pursuing a chance to be among the three players shaping the game’s conclusion can purchase or mint NFT characters.
Square Enix adopts a unique approach by releasing limited quantities of the original 10,000 character NFTs with the unveiling of each story chapter, gradually unveiling the game’s expansive universe. The Symbiogenesis Discord server plays a pivotal role, offering players special roles for in-game achievements. To be eligible for NFT character acquisition, players can secure a spot on the “allowlist” or presale list by completing tasks within the Discord server or on social media.
While some NFTs will be accessible for free, others will be purchasable using cryptocurrency. Notably, replica NFTs will find their home on Polygon, whereas originals will be on Ethereum’s mainnet.
Symbiogenesis Gameplay Modes and Features
From a narrative perspective, Symbiogenesis unfolds across six distinct chapters. Completion of all six chapters is a prerequisite for eligibility to be among the three players influencing the game’s conclusion.
The game introduces missions and quests, where missions unlock the main storyline and quests demand more collaborative efforts. Players will navigate through various game tabs such as Daily Rewards, Information, Missions, Story, Character, Quest Item, Collections, and Roles. Each tab serves a unique purpose, offering players a comprehensive gaming experience.
Symbiogenesis NFTs transcend mere collectibles, incorporating hints that aid players in achieving in-game milestones. Additionally, certain in-game items can be converted into NFTs for trade.
Introducing three synthetic currencies—Slot Release Points (SP), Replica Issue Points (RP), and Conversion Points (CP)—Symbiogenesis enables players to unlock story segments, convert in-game items into NFTs, and issue NFT replicas. This intricate system promises a multifaceted and immersive gaming experience within the evolving landscape of blockchain-powered entertainment.
