Live music experiences may be the metaverse’s standout attraction.
In April 2020, Travis Scott’s virtual concert within the video game “Fortnite” introduced millions to the concept of the metaverse. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, users seeking live entertainment gathered within the popular first-person shooter game to witness a pre-recorded virtual performance by Travis Scott, complete with imaginative, fantasy-inspired visuals.
Scott’s virtual concert’s success inspired numerous other prominent musicians, including Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, to host their own virtual shows, both within “Fortnite” and beyond. However, as pandemic restrictions ease and music enthusiasts return to live, in-person events, the future of virtual concerts remains uncertain.
In the third episode of “Is This The Metaverse?” podcast, hosts Alexander Lee and Sara Patterson delve into the world of virtual concerts. They engage with a passionate Roblox concert enthusiast and conduct an interview with a pop star native to the metaverse to uncover the reasons why and how live music is emerging as one of the most compelling draws for virtual world participation. Additionally, Sara embarks on her own journey into the metaverse.
Across six episodes, “Is This The Metaverse?” offers insights from companies transitioning physical experiences into virtual entertainment realms, including fitness, concerts, fashion, advertising, and coworking. It also delves into the motivations driving individuals to spend time in the metaverse and how these motivations may align or clash with the platforms’ profit-making objectives.
Co-hosted by Alexander Lee, Digiday’s senior gaming and esports reporter, and Digiday audio producer Sara Patterson, the podcast features Glossy international fashion reporter Zofia Zwieglinska as a guest host for an episode centered on virtual fashion. “Is This The Metaverse?” is available for subscription on Apple Podcasts and various podcast platforms.
