Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has urged Elon Musk to address the growing issue of bots on X, specifically calling for the restriction of API-generated posts. In a tweet posted on March 9, Zhao highlighted the difference between AI-driven tools like Grok, ChatGPT, and DeepSeek, which can generate content, and the automated bots that often flood the platform with spam, scams, and phishing links.
Zhao expressed frustration with the persistent nature of bot activity, especially within the crypto community, where these automated accounts have been used to promote fraudulent tokens and direct users to malicious sites. He noted that while AI applications are beneficial for tasks such as booking hotels or writing code, automated bots on social platforms are a disruptive nuisance.
“The bot problem is a major issue,” Zhao said. “If I want to chat with bots, I can use Grok in a private window. But the mass distribution of scam content is something that needs to stop.”
The crypto sector has been particularly affected, with bots impersonating industry leaders to deceive users into investing in fake projects. Additionally, these bots are often involved in “romance scams,” where they build relationships with individuals before attempting to defraud them through fabricated financial schemes.
Despite efforts by Musk, including the suggestion that users link a credit card to their accounts to discourage bot-driven activity, the issue persists. A study from the Network Contagion Research Institute in 2023 revealed how bots manipulate markets by artificially inflating altcoin prices through fake posts.
As the X community continues to grapple with the issue, users are hoping for more robust measures to ensure the platform’s integrity.
