On December 24, blockchain sleuth ZachXBT revealed that a threat actor targeting Solana meme investors and X pages has made around half a million dollars. Over 15 X accounts were recently compromised, with hackers promoting scam Solana meme coins to pocket an estimated $500,000.
Popular accounts such as Brett, Kick Streaming, and Alex Blania were among those breached. The hijacked pages would announce new coins and share contract addresses, luring unsuspecting victims to invest SOL. Since November 26, ZachXBT has identified over 15 such incidents, all traced back to an unknown malicious actor.
Scammers used scare tactics to steal passwords and other credentials. They mimicked X support agents, falsely claiming that users had violated terms of use and copyright policies.
After Elon Musk bought the company formerly known as Twitter, X became a global town square. The promise of free speech and creator payouts attracted more projects to build their brands on the social network. Hackers exploited X’s popularity by bombarding users with phishing links, taking advantage of the sense of urgency that social media account owners often feel when facing the threat of losing their accounts.
ZachXBT advised the public to “limit email address reuse between services” and use “security keys for 2FA on important accounts” to enhance personal cyber safety.
