In a groundbreaking initiative set to revolutionize space tourism, the private space exploration and research agency SERA has announced a strategic partnership with cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. This collaboration will see the launch of three space-themed NFTs on the Base chain, offering holders a chance to embark on a historic journey into space aboard a Blue Origin rocket, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
NFTs Offer Pathway to Space
SERA, renowned for its innovative approach to space exploration, is teaming up with Coinbase to issue these exclusive NFTs on the Ethereum Layer2 Base chain. The venture aims to democratize space travel by allowing NFT holders to potentially secure a seat on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. The selection process will involve voting, opening the door to participants from the United States, Russia, China, and other NFT enthusiasts.
Aiming to Democratize Space Exploration
SERA founder Sam Hutchinson emphasized the initiative’s mission to broaden access to space exploration. “This is about making space exploration accessible to everyone,” Hutchinson said.
Blockchain Voting Ensures Transparency
To maintain fairness and transparency in the selection process, SERA will utilize blockchain technology for voting. Hutchinson explained, “Given the historic nature of this event, it’s crucial to ensure the integrity of the selection process through KYC and blockchain-based voting.”
Joshua Skurla, SERA’s co-founder, added, “Space is inherently decentralized, and by harnessing Web3 principles, we can unite a diverse community of space enthusiasts.”
Coinbase engineer and founder Jesse Pollak highlighted the cultural synergy between Web3 and the space sector, noting, “SERA’s goal is to make space more inclusive, reflecting Web3’s spirit of economic freedom and innovation.”
The Cost of Space Travel
Currently, a seat on a Blue Origin flight is priced at a minimum of $1.25 million, with costs averaging $83,000 per minute of space travel. Founded by Jeff Bezos in 2000, Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket system encountered a setback in 2022 due to engine failures but resumed passenger flights in mid-2023.
This collaboration between SERA and Coinbase represents a pivotal moment in space tourism, promising to make space travel more accessible and transparent than ever before.
