Vatican Web3: NFT Prizes Grant Access to Manuscripts
Launched yesterday, the “Vatican Library Web3 Support Project” offers a unique opportunity for users to earn NFTs by sharing the project or making donations. These NFTs serve as keys to view high-resolution images of rare manuscripts owned by the Vatican Apostolic Library.
Project Launch and Objectives
The initiative, spearheaded by NTT DATA Italia in collaboration with the Vatican Apostolic Library, follows a successful debut in Japan last February. The primary goal is to broaden the online community of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana by connecting it more closely with its supporters.
How to Earn NFT Rewards and Access Manuscripts
Italian users have until July 16 to participate by sharing the project on social media or making donations via the project’s website. Participants will receive NFT rewards that grant access to the special manuscript collection.
Those who share the project will receive an “NFT Silver,” allowing them to view high-resolution images of 15 manuscripts. Donors will receive an “NFT Gold,” unlocking access to all 21 manuscripts in the selection.
Don Mauro Mantovani, Prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library, emphasized that the project aligns with the Library’s mission to make its unique collections accessible to the public and to promote research and scientific development. He praised NTT DATA’s role in creating new communities and expressed optimism for future initiatives.
Future Prospects
The project might expand to include new digital content formats, such as immersive experiences in XR, enhancing the way users interact with the Library’s resources.
Pope Francis’ NFT Endeavors
This isn’t the Vatican’s first foray into the world of NFTs. In 2021, Pope Francis launched the Scholas Occurrentes collection, a limited edition of NFT artworks available on the AkoinNFT marketplace. Proceeds from the initial sales supported the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation, the Pope’s global charity organization.
Conclusion
The “Vatican Library Web3 Support Project” marks a significant step for the Vatican in embracing modern technology to enhance accessibility to its cultural heritage. Through the use of NFTs, the initiative not only rewards supporters but also fosters a deeper connection between the Vatican Apostolic Library and the global community.
